Kauno „Žalgiryje“ praeitą sezoną karjerą baigęs aukštaūgis Antanas Kavaliauskas išbandė save vyr. trenerio poste Jungtinėse Amerikos Valstijose (JAV), kur dabar gyvena su šeima.

Jis pasidalino mintimis apie trumpą, bet gražų savo pastarąjį etapą Dalaso „Thunder“ vaikų ekipoje, kurį nutraukė pasaulį apėmusi koronaviruso pandemija.

„Buvau gavęs geriausią kalėdinę dovaną, kokios galėjau norėti. Gavau galimybę tapti vaikų treneriu mokykloje. Atėjau čia su savo stiliumi, filosofija, sezono viduryje keičiau viską trenerių štabe. Prašiau vaikų, kad man duotų geriausią, ką sugeba, ir jie atidavė man savo širdis.

Sezono eigoje vis geriau atrodėme kaip komanda, laimėjome turnyrą Oklahomoje, kai du starto penketo žaidėjai buvo traumuoti, buvome antri regione, antri Teksase. Buvome septinti visoje šalyje.

Bet viskas buvo atšaukta dėl svarbios priežasties, bet tai sudaužė man širdį. Vaikai vis dar norėjo treniruotis, kai jiems pranešiau šią žinią... Bet turėjome paskutinę treniruotę. Buvo garbė ir privilegija treniruoti juos ir būti šios organizacijos dalimi. Ačiū už nepamirštamus 3 mėnesius“, – rašė lietuvis.

Got the best Xmas present I could have ever asked for. I was offered an opportunity to be the head coach for home school kids for the @dallasthunder organization (Varsity and JV). I came in with my own philosophy and basketball style, and had to change everything with the coaching staff in the middle of the season. What I was asking from my kids was to give me their best, and they have given me their hearts!!!! As the season progressed we got better and better as a team, won a tournament in Oklahoma (with out two starters that got hurt), came second in district (without two starters that got hurt), second in the state of Texas (again, without two starters that got hurt), came second in Regionals (without one starter that got hurt and a player that just started to practice with us). We were ranked #7 in the whole country coming in to the national tournament in Missouri (and boy we were going to make some noise). We got so much better as a team over the next two weeks, and we looked a lot better than we did at regionals. Then, everything got canceled (for a good reason) but it broke my heart, it broke their parent’s hearts, and most importantly it broke the player’s hearts.... After the news got out about the cancellation I got news that the kids still wanted to practice....and so today we held our last practice....What an honor and privilege it was to coach these kids, to be part of a great organization, and to get to know everyone that was involved and helped as much as they could.
