"Akasvayu" klube - didelių permainų metas
Big changes are on the horizon this summer for Girona side Akasvayu after the club decided to part ways with coach Svetislav Pesic , and have announced today that Catalan coach Pedro Martinez will be the Serbian's replacement.
The situation has been on the cards for a while since Pesic publically criticised the club back in May, claiming that in reality the club "didn't exist" and that not enough was being done to ensure the sporting success of side. Tension has been high between the coach and Sporting Director Antonio Maceiras since that time, culminating this week with Pesic's exit.
The departure of the most successful coach in Girona's history, who this year led the club to their best ever season with a haul of trophies consisting of a Catalan Cup and a first ever European title (the FIBA EuroCup), will also now pave the way for a string of further exits of both playing and coaching staff. The club has confirmed that Martinez will only have one assitant this year, meaning either the Serbian Dejan Kamenjasevic or Catalan Borja Comenge will also be heading out the door. Amongst the players who'll be off to pastures new will be Gregor Fucka, whose contract it has been confirmed will not be renewed, as well as Kyle Hill (injured all season and not seen one minute of play) and German Gabriel. Other players such as Marinovic and Keselj will have their futures in doubt, along with 41 year old Darryl Middleton, the club's highest earner Dalibor Bagaric, and Darius Salenga who has offers from elsewhere.
The arrival of a Catalan coach has been hailed by the club who claimed that difficulties in communication have arisen this season, and that the new coach had to be someone "who dominated the language". Martinez is not known as a coach who likes to bring in his own people, so apart from the one seat less next to the coach on the bench not too many other changes are likely to brought in by the new man.
Martinez was head coach with Estudiantes at the start of this past season, before being axed in February and replaced by his assistant Mariano de Pablos. He has previously led TAU Ceramica, Gran Canaria and DKV Joventut (then RAM Joventut) with whom he won the only trophy of his coaching career, a Korac Cup in 1990.
